On RTÉ Radio 1's Tonight With Vincent Browne Show last night, Frank McBrearty Jnr claimed that, in July 2002, the Government failed to inform the inquest into the death of Richard Barron that the garda investigation had been re-designated.

The death of the Donegal man was re-designated from that of murder to dangerous driving causing death. The inquest later returned an open verdict into the death of Mr Barron.

Mr McBrearty also claimed that the State failed to inform the inquest and the McBrearty family that he and his cousin, Mark McConnell, were no longer considered to be suspects in the death of Mr Barron.

He further said that on 13 February 2002 both he and Mr McConnell were officially removed as suspects from the Barron case. However, he said it was not until November 2004 that he received a letter from Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy informing him of this fact.

The second Morris Tribunal report into the death of Mr Barron, published last week, found that elements within the gardaí had set out to frame Mr McBrearty and Mr McConnell for Mr Barron's murder.
