Hundreds of Irish football fans have failed to get to the Faroe Islands for tonight's World Cup qualifier.

Hundreds of Irish football fans have failed to get to the Faroe Islands for tonight's World Cup qualifier.

Thick fog led to the closure of the islands' only airport.

Earlier, the Dublin Airport Authority said that three of the four flights which were scheduled to fly to the Faroe Islands were cancelled.

A fourth flight was diverted to Stavanger in Norway, but is now on its way back to Dublin.
