Sweden is to introduce a ban on smoking in all bars and restaurants at midnight tonight.
It will join countries including Ireland and Norway which have already introduced the measure.
The ban has been largely welcomed in Sweden where a recent poll showed that 85% of people were in favour of ending smoking in restaurants and 77% support a ban in bars and clubs.
Two-thirds of smokers questioned for the poll earlier this month said they agreed with the ban.
The move coincides with World No Tobacco Day, which is being marked in Dublin with a conference on tobacco control.
The Irish Cancer Society, which is hosting the conference, highlighted that tobacco consumption among young girls is on the increase around the world.
