The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Zapatero, has condemned this morning's car bomb attack in the capital, Madrid, in which at least 34 people were injured.

A Spanish newspaper was tipped off by the Basque separatist group ETA ahead of the blast, which occurred at 9.30am local time in a northern suburb of the Spanish capital.

The Basque newspaper Gara told AFP it had received advance warning of the blast, which occurred at around 7.30am Irish time, from ETA.

Police were able to evacuate the area before the bomb, which consisted of explosives stuffed inside two backpacks and placed inside a van, went off.

However, dozens of people were injured by flying glass after the blast smashed windows in nearby buildings and wrecked several cars.

The blast comes just a week after Mr Zapatero won parliamentary backing for a controversial plan to open talks with ETA if the group agrees to disband.
