The Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, has confirmed that a postal code system will be introduced in Ireland by the beginning of 2008.

As in Britain, the system would mean a combination of numbers or letters will be added to every address.

Mr Dempsey says consumers, businesses and public services will benefit.

He argues that without a post code system Ireland would be at a disadvantage to other EU countries.
