The Irish Road Haulage Association has said that up to 100 hauliers could go out of business over the next 12 months if immediate action is not taken by the Government to offset high fuel prices.
A survey by the AA has found that the price of petrol and diesel has hit record levels.
Consumer and business groups have called on the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen, to intervene and grant concessions on excise duty to motorists.
The IRHA has warned that protest action by its members is inevitable if action is not taken.
