The lower house of the German parliament has overwhelmingly backed the EU Constitution.

The lower house of the German parliament has overwhelmingly backed the EU Constitution.

Of 594 votes cast, 569 backed the constitution, with 23 against and two abstentions.

The upper house, the Bundesrat, is expected to complete German ratification with a vote on 27 May, just days before French and Dutch referendums on the constitution.

Opinion polls have shown support for the constitution among the German public to be around 60% with all the main parties backing it.

Commentators say the vote has been timed to provide a boost to the Yes campaign in the French referendum on the constitution later this month.

Slovakia ratified the treaty yesterday, only hours after the lower house of the Austrian parliament voted in favour, although in Austria the measure still has to be approved by the upper house.

Earlier, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania and Slovenia had ratified the constitution, while Spain's senate is expected to formally approve it in the coming weeks.
