A spokesperson for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment has said officials are in contact with Turkish construction firm Gama's legal advisers to verify the transfer of funds to the personal accounts of all Gama workers.

The officials are also in contact with the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs over the issues raised by the General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, David Begg.

Earlier today, Mr Begg wrote to Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister, Micheál Martin, calling on him to provide emergency social welfare payments and accommodation for the GAMA workers in the dispute.

Mr Begg says that Gama has removed the workers from the payroll, and stopped their food supply.

Mr Martin urged all parties to use the available mechanisms of the State to resolve their differences.

He also claimed that the company plans to evict the workers from their accommodation on Friday, 29 April.

Mr Begg said the Gama situation presented an appalling vista of people being left homeless and destitute in a foreign country.

The formal request was made in consultation with SIPTU President, Jack O'Connor.

Meanwhile, SIPTU has made arrangements to fund the purchase of food by protesting workers at a supermarket near their current accommodation.
