230 construction workers who are in dispute with their employer the Turkish-based multinational firm, Gama, have been taken off the company payroll today.

The workers, who held a protest march this afternoon to the company's headquarters in Santry, say they have not received food today and they are being threatened with eviction from their accommodation.

The Socialist Party TD, Joe Higgins, who has been campaigning on behalf of the workers, accused GAMA of vindictive bullying.

Mr Higgins said that although money belonging to some workers which had been held in an Amsterdam bank was now being returned to them, the workers would continue protesting over two outstanding issues - overtime payments and low pay to fixed wage workers.

The company says the workers all have jobs to return to either in Ireland, Turkey or other countries where Gama has contracts but they are refusing to do so.

Meanwhile, a meeting is being held of all the unions representing workers at Gama Construction to decide on a co-ordinated response to the company's actions.
