The former commander of US troops in Iraq, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, has been cleared over abuses at Abu Ghraib jail.

US officials say an inquiry found no evidence of wrongdoing by General Sanchez and three of his top aides - Major General Walter Wojdakowski, Major General Barbara Fast and Colonel Marc Warren.

Brigadier General Janis Karpinski was relieved of her command and was reprimanded in the aftermath of the abuse. She had commanded the military unit which was responsible for the sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib.

Five prison guards have been punished for their part in the abuse, while two more have courts martial pending.
