Spain moves to legalise gay marriage

The lower house of the Spanish parliament has passed a controversial bill to legalise gay marriage and permit gay couples to adopt children.

The bill now moves to the Senate for debate, where it is expected to be endorsed.

The proposed legislation will eventually put homosexual and heterosexual couples on an equal legal footing and make Spain the third country in Europe, after Belgium and Holland, to permit same sex marriages.
