Councillors in Dublin have threatened to block plans, revealed by RTÉ News yesterday, to expand the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant.

They have also disputed management claims that such a development was known for years.

Yesterday RTÉ News revealed the Ringsend Plant was to be significantly expanded, just two years after it opened.

The Council's Assistant City Manager, Matt Twomey, maintained its intention was clear since 1997 and represented in documents in 2003 and 2004.

However, councillors from the southeast area said today while there may have been provisions, neither politicians or councillors knew the plan was going forward.

Councillors from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and the Progressive Democrats questioned the management competence given that foul odours have continued for years.

Labour's Kevin Humphreys said he would block any expansion until officials proved that the long-running problem with odours was eliminated.

Gormley questions sludge storage

Separately, the Green Party Chairman, John Gormley, raised the matter in the Dáil that sludge from Ringsend was questionably being sent to a facility in Tullow County Carlow which did not have proper storage.

Mr Gormley went onto say that the site had been refused planning permission in 2002 and was operating without a licence.
He called for an inquiry into the plant by the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche.

However, Dublin City Council has disputed this saying the material, called sludge cake, was being transported to farms for spreading directly on to the land, and this was in accordance with national regulations.
