The strike by 300 quarry and construction workers in the west of Ireland has ended.

The employees of Frank Harrington Ltd voted to accept an increased pay offer.

They had been engaged in a series of work stoppages in support of a pay claim at quarries and offices in Castlebar and Kilkelly in Co Mayo, Ballisodare in Co Sligo and Claregalway in Co Galway.

A workers' spokesman said they had voted to call off their action after they were offered a 20% pay increase.

The striking workers had been staging a demonstration outside the company's headquarters near the village of Kilkelly since yesterday morning.

They were demanding better pay rates for a wide range of work in quarrying, road construction and building projects.

The 300 employees rejected earlier pay offers made by the company yesterday evening and this morning.
