Police in Iraq say insurgents have killed 15 Iraqi soldiers travelling in a convoy south of Baghdad.
The soldiers' convoy was attacked near the town of Latifiya.
It comes as Iraqis mark the second anniversary of the fall of Baghdad to the US-led coalition.
The statue of former President Saddam Hussein was brought crashing down in one of the city's central squares on this day two years ago.
Tens of thousands of Iraqis have marked the anniversary with protests in Firdus Square, demanding that US troops leave the country.
The rally, which was organised by radical anti-US Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, is believed to be the largest demonstration since US troops entered the country.
