Gardaí investigating the death of 11-year-old Robert Holohan in Midleton, Co Cork, last January have interviewed more than 1,000 people, a court has heard.
Mitchelstown District Court in Co Cork was also told that gardaí have taken over 1,300 statements.
Wayne O'Donoghue, a 20-year-old engineering student from Ballyedmond in Midleton, is charged with Robert's manslaughter.
He was remanded in custody for a fortnight during a brief hearing this morning.
Today was the defendant's sixth court appearance. He has been in custody without bail for over two months.
His solicitor Emmet Boyle said Mr O'Donoghue would not be consenting to any further remand applications beyond 14 April, when he is due before the district court again.
The 42 days allowed to gardaí for preparation and service of the Book of Evidence to Mr O'Donoghue has elapsed and today Inspector Martin Dorney successfully applied for an extension.
He told Judge Michael Patwell that gardaí had to pursue almost 2,000 different lines of inquiry, more than 1,000 people were interviewed and over 1,300 statements were taken.
Inspector Dorney said this was a serious matter and society demanded that it would be investigated properly.
