Pope John Paul II is not to be hospitalised according to the head doctor at the Gemelli hospital in Rome.
Tonight, a statement release by the Vatican confirmed that the Pope is suffering from a high fever caused by a urinary infection.
It said the Pope was receiving 'appropriate antibiotic therapy'.
There have also been unconfirmed reports that the 84-year-old Pontiff has received the Sacrament of the Infirm, previous known as 'Last Rites'.
A Vatican spokesman said he could not confirm the reports but Church sources said it was likely the Pontiff had received the sacrament, given the precarious state of his health.
Pope John Paul underwent the tracheotomy on 24 February in Rome's Gemelli Hospital.
Yesterday doctors inserted a feeding tube through his nose and into his stomach to try to boost his strength and help his recovery.
