Jewish settlers have warned that they will begin a campaign of civil disobedience to protest against Israeli government plans to evict them from the Gaza Strip.

Last night, the Israeli parliament approved the plan to withdraw troops and Jewish settlers from the occupied territory.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, overcame the last obstacle to his plan when the Knesset ratified this year's budget, which opponents had hoped would be rejected.

This would have led to early elections and a postponement of the plan to start the pull-out in July.

A spokesman for Gaza Strip residents said hundreds of thousands of people would take to the streets to demonstrate.

Settler leaders have said they will not encourage violence, but have warned that the decision to give up settlements, which is welcomed by most Israelis, could trigger a civil war.

Arms found in Gaza border arrest

A Palestinian carrying a bag with 50 pistols and two rifles inside has been arrested while trying to sneak into Gaza from Egypt.

The Palestinian was picked up beside the border south of the Gaza Strip by Egyptian security.
