Pope John Paul II has failed to appear at a midday Easter Monday blessing that traditionally marks the end of papal Holy Week celebrations.
The Vatican had never confirmed that this year's event would take place, but expectant crowds filled St Peter's Square.
However, the Pope's windows remained firmly shuttered. This is the first time during his 26-year papacy that John Paul had failed to appear at midday on Easter Monday for the blessing.
