Pope John Paul has used a video link to join a traditional Way of the Cross procession in Rome tonight.
It was the first time in his 26 year Pontificate he missed the procession at the Colosseum.
Because of his illness, the 84-year old remained in the Vatican where he watched the beginning of the service in his private chapel.
In Dublin, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin led the Way of the Cross procession in the Phoenix Park.
Hundreds of people followed and walked for over an hour reciting prayers from the Wellington Monument to the Papal Cross.
The annual event was organised by the Communion and Liberation Group and was held at the same time as similar events were held in a number of other parts of the world, including one at Ground Zero in New York.
