President Mary McAleese has met her South Korean counterpart Roh Moo-Hyun in Seoul as part of her continuing four-day visit to South Korea.
The visit is the first by an Irish President since Seoul and Dublin forged diplomatic ties in 1983.
Officials said the two discussed North Korea's nuclear ambitions and ways to boost bilateral ties.
Bilateral trade stood at $1.5 billion in 2004, with Seoul's exports to Ireland reaching $677 million and imports from Ireland totalling $829 million.
President McAleese visited Japan last week as part of a ten-day trip to Asia.
