The SDLP has launched its proposals for achieving a united Ireland through the Good Friday Agreement.

Speaking at the launch today, party leader Mark Durkan accused Sinn Féin and the IRA of damaging the true Republican ideal and the name of nationalism.

The party launched its proposals in Belfast this morning, Dublin this afternoon and Newry this evening.

The party says the key to its approach is that the institutions and guarantees achieved in the Good Friday Agreement would extend to unionists in a united Ireland, just as they do to nationalists in the UK.

The SDLP is asking parties in the Republic to endorse its strategy, and is seeking a date for a referendum on a united Ireland, as provided for in the Good Friday Agreement.

The party says the document launched today is a restatement of existing policy, and is not a reaction to proposals for a united Ireland published by Sinn Féin last month.
