The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has said it views the recent statement by the men imprisoned for Garda McCabe's death as a cynical attempt to regain lost public opinion.

The organisation rejected the move, attributing it to what it called 'Sinn Féin/IRA'.

President Joe Dirwan described the statement as 'breath-taking' in its cynicism.

The association also called on Sinn Féin to encourage those killers of Det Garda McCabe who are still at large to give themselves up.
