The Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, has called for a thorough review of the teaching of Irish at primary and secondary school level.

He said the review should consider if more harm than good is being done to the language by forcing unwilling students to complete Irish to Leaving Certificate level.

Mr Kenny also said the question of whether or not Irish as a school subject should be optional also needs to be examined.
