The hearing on the proposed development of the State's first municipal incinerator was due to hear evidence today from experts engaged by the company hoping to build the facility.

The company, Indaver, is seeking a licence that would allow it to build the €85 million incinerator at Carranstown near Duleek in Co Meath.

A senior Indaver official and four experts were scheduled to give evidence on the second day of the Environmental Protection Agency's hearing in Drogheda.

Sixteen parties objecting to the granting of the licence will be able to cross-examine the experts.

Yesterday, the head of Indaver, John Ahern, said the incinerator might end up accepting waste from outside the designated northeast region if legislation changes.

The hearing is expected to last one week, but the EPA decision will not be known for several months.
