The country's shellfish farmers have accused local councils and the Government of causing health scares which damage their industry because of the uncontrolled pollution of coastal waters.

The farmers have already won two complaints to the European Commission against the Government over pollution.

They are signing a complaint against the Government at their annual conference in Galway today.

If the complaint to the commission succeeds, it could cost the State €20,000 a day in fines.
