A report by the Dáil's Public Accounts Committee into the Residential Institutions Redress Scheme has been delayed, to allow the Committee to study yesterday's High Court judgement.

The report, which had been due for publication tomorrow, had been widely expected to criticise the way in which the Government indemnified the religious orders against abuse claims.

However, it is now likely to be delayed for at least a week while committee members study the High Court judgement, and assess the implications, if any, for the scheme.

The total money offered by the Residential Institutions Redress Board since it was set up now exceeds €140m.

Around 5,500 applications have been made to the board since it was set up.

It is believed over 2,500 cases have been completed, with close to 2,000 offers being made to victims following settlement talks.

In excess of 550 awards have been made following full private hearings.

At least 12 people have been awarded between €200,000 and €300,000 and 66 have been awarded between €150,000 and €200,000.

Around 500 more victims have accepted awards of between €100,000 and €150,000 while around 1,400 further people were awarded between €50,000 and €100,000.

At least 400 were awarded less than €50,000.

No award was made to one person who applied. A few dozen cases were deemed not to fall within the remit of the Residential Institutions Redress Board and were refused.
