The world's first ever anti-smoking treaty comes into effect today nearly a decade after it was first proposed by the World Health Organisation.
57 countries have so far ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Within five years these countries will have to ban the advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco as well as reduce exposure to second-hand smoke.
51 other countries, including the United States, have not yet ratified the treaty.
An estimated five million people die worldwide each year from smoking related illnesses.
