The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, has announced changes to the driving test.
From next Monday, all candidates taking the test will be expected to be familiar with basic technical checks that would be required on the type of vehicle they are using.
For example, a candidate may be asked to show how oil levels or tyre pressure should be checked.
The changes are being introduced in response to an EU directive.
Minister Cullen said the changes would enhance the test and contribute to road safety by increasing awareness of the need to ensure a vehicle is properly prepared before being driven on the road.
