An investigation into the United Nations Oil for Food Programme for Iraq under Saddam Hussein has strongly criticised the official in charge, Benon Sevan.

An investigation into the United Nations Oil for Food Programme for Iraq under Saddam Hussein has strongly criticised the official in charge, Benon Sevan.

Presenting an interim report, the head of the Independent Inquiry team Paul Volcker said Mr Sevan had seriously undermined the integrity of the United Nations by violating rules on sales.

The controversial scheme let Iraq sell oil to buy food and medicine to ease the effects of international sanctions.
