Unionists 'outraged' by McAleese's remarksThursday 27 January 2005 22.14
President Mary McAleese has found herself at the centre of a row with unionists, following remarks made in an interview on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme.
In the interview, President McAleese compared sectarianism in Northern Ireland, to the irrational hatred for Jews in Nazi Germany.
She said some children in Northern Ireland were taught to hate Catholics in the same way Nazis despised Jews. The President’s comments have provoked outrage amongst unionists.
Ian Paisley Jr of the DUP described the remarks as completely irrational and said they were designed to damn an entire generation of Protestant people.
