Over 40 organisations representing anti-racism and human rights groups have strongly criticised the Government over its lack of action in challenging racism in Ireland.

A report by the NGO Alliance says Government research on racist attitudes in Ireland is ineffective. It also criticises the Government's refusal to recognise Travellers as an ethnic group.

The remarks come ahead of the publication of the Government's Action Plan Against Racism, which is due this week.

The NGO Alliance Co-ordinator, Marian Tannan, says the Government should publicly acknowledge that there is a growing problem of racial discrimination in Ireland.

She also criticised the delay in bringing about the Government's Action Plan.
