Poll shows hike in support for Govt

listen

An opinion poll in today's Irish Times indicates that the satisfaction rating for the Government is up nine points since October.

For the main opposition parties the MRBI/TNS survey shows Fine Gael slightly down, with Labour unchanged.

It suggests that support for Sinn Féin is largely unaffected by the controversy over last month's Belfast bank raid.

However, it indicates a sharp drop in the satisfaction rating of party leader Gerry Adams.

Responding to the poll, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern attributed his Government's improved showing to its efforts to listen to what the people are saying.

Speaking in China, Mr Ahern said that corrective economic measures had now helped to bring the economy back, and that had also affected the poll.

Mr Ahern added that the Government would continue to try to reflect the views of the people and to implement them.
