The inquest into the death of a nine-year-old girl last February following an operation at Cavan General Hospital has been adjourned until 19 May.

Superintendent John Murphy told the inquest in Cavan today that the garda file into the death of Frances Sheridan was still with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He said it was a very complicated matter and that the DPP was giving it very close consideration.

Solicitor for the Sheridan family, Patricia O'Reilly, said they were hoping a decision on the matter would be reached soon by the DPP's office.

Over a year ago Frances had her appendix removed at Cavan General. She returned three weeks later complaining of stomach pains.

She was told it was probably a tummy bug and two junior doctors sent her home. The girl died 36 hours later.

A post mortem examination revealed that she had died after her bowel became trapped by internal scar tissue.

Both the gardaí and the North Eastern Health Board launched separate investigations.

The health board found that there had been a number of failings by individuals and by the system, but no one was reprimanded for the events which led to the girl's death.
