A garda investigation is under way in relation to the procurement of building contractor work at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

The Comptroller and Auditor General, John Purcell, told the Public Accounts Committee this morning that there was clear evidence of irregularities in the way construction work was awarded.

Mr Purcell said these irregularities included the re-tendering for work already done and the seeking of payment for work not done.

He also said there were reasons to doubt the authenticity of certain tenders.

The committee is looking at the hospital's accounts between 1998 and 2004 and a hospital official has since resigned.

The Chief Executive of Beaumont Hospital, Liam Duffy, said there were now new managers for all projects on campus and controls were in place.
