The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, has announced that the Government will double its funding for the tsunami disaster from €10 million to €20 million.

Speaking from the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, Mr Ahern said he would be speaking to a number of NGOs in the next few days about how the money should be allocated.

Meanwhile, a decision has also been made to send four army officers to Sri Lanka on an assessment basis. It is understood these will include logistics officers.

It is also thought that they will provide analysis on whether or not an Irish Army detachment could be usefully employed in relief efforts that are ongoing in the country.
