Increase in number of road deaths

Figures released today show that during the seasonal Garda Road Safety Campaign the number of deaths doubled compared to the same period last year.

Twenty six people have been killed in the first three weeks of the campaign compared to 13 in 2003. Eleven of those killed this year were pedestrians.

To date 375 people have died on the roads since January 2004, compared to 335 for the same period in 2003.

Meanwhile 885 people have been arrested by Gardaí for suspected drink driving in the first three weeks of the campaign.

This represents an overall increase of 13% in arrests compared to the same period in 2003. In the third week of the campaign 318 people were arrested. This compares to 238 in the comparable week of 2003.
