The status of Leitrim as a constituency is not to be reviewed before 2006.
Seven county deputies from Leitrim County Council met the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, this morning to discuss keeping Co Leitrim united as a constituency.
But Mr Roche said he could not do anything while the legislation was going through the Dáil.
Earlier this year, the Constituency Commission published its recommendations for constituency changes, based on the 2002 census.
One recommendation was that Leitrim be split in two constituencies - Sligo-North Leitrim and Roscommon-South Leitrim.
The delegation from Leitrim was told today that the status of the constituency could be reviewed after the next census which is due in 2006.
The deputies have asked the Minister for the Environment to establish a commission to review their case as soon as he new census is in.
