Aer Lingus union representatives have held a meeting with the Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, to discuss the future of the airline.
Afterwards, both sides described the meeting as constructive with a frank exchange of views.
The General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, David Begg, described the meeting as the beginning of a consultation process which will be complete by the end of January.
Top of the agenda was the issue of future funding for Aer Lingus, which needs to raise €1 billion in investment to expand its fleet.
The parties were expected to discuss a number of funding options, including full or partial privatisation.
