A leading academic says Ireland's current road traffic legislation is not realising its potential to save lives and reduce serious injuries.
After studying data for the past five years, Professor Denis Cusack from the Department of Forensic Medicine at UCD is concerned that Ireland's conviction rate for drink driving is falling.
One study of fatal, sole occupant, single-vehicle collisions in Co Kildare from 1994 to 2004 also found that half the drivers were over the legal alcohol limit.
Professor Cusack and his departmental colleague, Dr Cliona McGovern, conclude that it is imperative that current road safety programmes, including random breath testing, be fully implemented.
