Four workers have been found alive in a coal mine in northern China, leaving 166 others trapped and feared dead after a gas explosion.

Almost 300 workers were in the state-run mine in Shaanxi province at the time of the blast, but 123 managed to escape.

The cause of the explosion is not known.

The accident could be one of the worst in recent years in China's notoriosly dangerous mining industry.

Official figures show that more than 4,000 people died in mining accidents in the first nine months of this year.
