The Western Health Board has withdrawn a court bid to block the transfer of the licence of the Galway Pub, Fibber Magee's, which was at the centre of a revolt against the smoking ban earlier this year.

At Galway District Court, the licence was transferred from Ronan Lawless to Ciaran Levanzin after Mr Levanzin gave an undertaking to Judge Mary Fahy to comply fully with smoking ban regulations.

The health board had earlier lodged an objection to the licence transfer.

Mr Levanzin told the court he understood the new laws were binding to everybody and he withdrew fully any statements he might have made in the past encouraging anybody to break the law.
