A relation of the Co Donegal McBrearty family who sued the State alleging gardaí had wrongly arrested her in relation to the death of Richie Barron received €260,000 in compensation.

Roisín McConnell, who is the wife of Frank McBrearty's nephew, claimed the gardaí had used terrorising tactics, and appalling methods of interrogation and intimidation towards her.

Mrs McConnell settled her claim in April 2003.

The State is facing up to 50 claims for damages arising out of the McBrearty/Richie Barron affair in Co Donegal.

The size of the McConnell settlement was revealed today when the High Court Taxing Master reserved his decision on a claim for legal costs of about €500,000 in relation to the claim.

Ms McConnell sued the Garda Commissioner, the Minister for Justice and the State for damages for psychological trauma arising from her arrest and detention.
