US President, George W Bush, has claimed that terrorists are considering how they can disrupt next Tuesday's American presidential election.

But Mr Bush said there was no specific evidence of a terrorist plot.

Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton began campaigning today on behalf of the Democratic presidential challenger, John Kerry.

Mr Clinton, who had heart bypass surgery only six weeks ago, said he had decided to cut short his recuperation because the race was so close.

Separately, former President Jimmy Carter has said Mr Bush has been adroit in exploiting the 11 September attacks for political gain.

In an interview in today's Guardian newspaper, Mr Carter said Mr Bush has elevated himself to a heroic commander-in-chief.
