Archbishop speaks of clerical abuse impact

watch

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has said the full dimensions of clerical abuse scandals may still not have emerged.

In a speech to the National Conference of Priests in Dromantine, Co Down, last night, Dr Martin said more than one generation had been, in effect, unchurched.

He added that the power-seeking priest would find very little echo in the hearts of young faith-seekers.

Dr Martin also said openness should replace much of the secrecy surrounding the appointments of clergy in the Catholic Church.
