Eight local authorities have today declined or failed to vote on a motion supporting the entry of former MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon in the race for the Presidency.
They are Kildare, Donegal, Galway, Roscommon, Westmeath and Limerick County Councils and Limerick and Cork City Councils.
Just one council, Galway City Council, went against the trend and nominated her to stand for the office.
The council supported Ms Scallon's request by seven votes to five, with one abstention.
She was proposed by Green Party councillor Niall O Brolcháin and seconded by Independent councillor Michael J Crowe.
She also got support from Labour and Sinn Féin.
Meanwhile, Ms Scallon's bid failed to make it onto the agenda for discussion at Cork County Council's bi-monthly meeting this morning.
