It now appears unlikely that Dana Rosemary Scallon will get a nomination from Galway County Council in her bid to stand as a presidential election candidate.
The majority grouping on the council, a coalition of 16 Fine Gael, Labour, Sinn Féin and Independent councillors met last night to decide whether or not they would support her nomination bid.
The Mayor of Co Galway and Independent councillor, Willie Burke, said afterwards he believed the former MEP would not get a nomination when the full 31-member council meets on Monday next.
The Fine Gael Whip on the council, Jarlath McDonagh, said the councillors had not received a directive to oppose Ms Scallon's nomination.
He said however, he would not be voting for her and he thought the odds were 'stacked against her getting a nomination'.
Yesterday, five other County Councils blocked her nomination.
