The Northern Secretary, Paul Murphy, has confirmed that he will be making an announcement regarding calls for a public inquiry into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane in the coming days.

Mr Murphy refused to be drawn on the nature of such an inquiry, as to whether it would be public or otherwise, but has said the British government's policy regarding an inquiry will be made known within days.

Last week the former Special Branch informer, Ken Barrett, was sentenced to 22 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to Mr Finucane's murder.
