The Green Party has said that it is not a forgone conclusion that Eamon Ryan will get the 20 nominations from TDs and Senators he requires to stand in the presidential election.

Party chairman John Gormley said the Green Party was grateful to the Labour Party for their promises of nominations. He added however, that he appreciated it would prove difficult for some to be seen as 'major stakeholders' in another party's campaign.

Deputy Gormley conceded that Eamon Ryan had not received as many Independent nominations as expected, making him more dependent on Labour Party support.

In a poll conducted by RTÉ's News at One programme, 13 members of the Labour Parliamentary Party have said they would support Mr Ryan as a presidential candidate.

Seven say they would not support him and a further four are undecided. The two remaining TDs were unable to be contacted.

The Green Party's nomination of Mr Ryan as a presidential candidate is subject to approval by the party's national council, which meets tomorrow in Clonakilty.
