The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse has heard details of serious sexual assaults carried out on pupils at St Joseph's Industrial school at Ferryhouse in Clonmel in the 1970s.

A former manager of the school, Fr Patrick Pierce, told the Commission how a boy reported to him in 1979 that serious abuses were carried out in the mid-to-late 1970s.

Fr Pierce said in evidence that the brother responsible for the abuse, a prefect in charge of the junior unit, was dismissed from the order and removed from the school.

The brother later spent time in hospital, Fr Pierce said. The matter was reported to gardaí in the 1990s but not at the time of the incidents.

A full garda inquiry later took place after complaints from past pupils and the brother was later tried in court.
