The Republican Party in the US formally nominated George W Bush as the party's candidate in the presidential election in November last night.

The nomination took place on the second day of the four-day Republican Convention in New York.

The First Lady, Laura Bush, and the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, were the keynote speakers last night.

The First Lady said she had watched her husband agonise over the decision to go to war in Iraq. But she said America had to take tough choices in order to lead the world towards greater security and freedom.

She said 50 million people in Iraq were now free from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.

Mrs Bush said her husband could be counted on in a crisis and she urged Americans to allow him to serve for four more years.

Mr Schwarzenegger also wooed the crowd with his personal story of success as an immigrant.

The Governor of California said anyone who believed that America, and not the United Nations, was the best hope for democracy was a Republican.

President Bush is due to address delegates tomorrow night.
